The Art of Felt

The Art of Felt aims to put the spotlight on fibre art and the use of wool as a medium for fine art. We want to connect you with this humble, versatile, ancient fibre. Here we present its versatility in the artist’s hands using a number of techniques that give it a new voice – one that has the power to move you, tell stories, make you laugh and inspire you. Fenella is constantly amazed by the 'world of sheep’. She is grateful to all the felt makers and sheep farmers encountered on her travels. Rosemarie invites people into her world as she sculpts and “paints” with wool. Yes, the eyes and teeth are wool. A life long learner, Debra shares her passion for the wonder of wool at every opportunity.

The Artists

As one of the founding members of Pembina Hills Art Gallery, Fenella Temmerman is excited to return with The Art of Felt.

After 'painting on silk' while living in Morden, Fenella is now drawn to wet felting and particularly nuno felting - the fusion of hand-dyed silk and wool fibre. Inspired by the textures and wearable art made possible by this ancient art form, she has appreciated taking it further by connecting with felt makers and sheep farmers while travelling in Canada, Britain and Australia.

Fenella is a member of the International Feltmakers Association and the Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba where last year she regularly facilitated “Felt Talk”.

International Feltmakers, Catherine O’Leary, Marjolaine Arsenault and Moy Mackay have influenced Fenella’s work. Fiona Duthie’s workshops continue to be a source of skill and inspiration.

Debra Shnider is a felt artist with a penchant for wet felting. Of special interest is the sculptural aspect of the medium. She seeks to incorporate various techniques to explore shape and structure in her art wearables and sculptures.

Through a series of course work, retreats and workshops led by both Canadian and International felt artists, Debra continues to develop her knowledge of this fascinating art form.

Debra is a member of the International Feltmakers Association, Fibre Art Divas and Fibre Art Network.

She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba and can be contacted at dshnider@icloud.com.

Franco-manitoban artist Rosemarie Péloquin playfully presents moments of everyday life. She fashions faces and hands out of wool to explore our humanity and bring a measure of hope and connection. She feels working with clouds of wool and tiny barbed wands makes the process feel magical.

Her work emerges from a background in interior design, a career in Parks

Canada, teaching, coaching, travel and family. It has been featured in video-reportages, has appeared in international magazines and has shown in exhibitions in Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario and B.C. and is found in collections in Canada, Germany and France.
